Day 7-Hiva Oa ( Atuona-Puamau)

What a beautiful day to visit the island of Hiva Oa.We arrived in Atuona, second largest village in the Marquesas. We decided to Hike to a scenic viewpoint while taking time to enjoy breathtaking views of the Bay of Atuona. On the way down to the village, we stopped at the cemetery. Beneath a Frangipani Tree is the famous artist Paul Gauguin's tombstone with the simple words: Paul Gauguin 1903.

Nearby, is the tombstone of the Belgian singer-composer Jacques Brel, who died in 1978.

We also got the opportunity to visit the Paul Gauguin's infamous " House of Pleasure" and the adjoining museum where the artist lived and did some of his best work.

Following a great Lunch at Hoa Nui, a family-run restaurant, we boarded the "truck"(Polynesian Bus) and headed back to the Aranui for the second part of the visit of Hiva Oa.

We arrived in In Puamau in late afternoon. We travelled by 4WD with our guides Mila and Steven to the most incredible archeological site for "Tikis" outside of Easter Island.

Once we reached Mea's Iipona, our very knowledgeable guides took us back in time with stories of these haunting statues of ancient times. Surrounded by beautiful lush grounds, we could feel the "Mana" ( Spiritual Power) at the site.It is truly something unexplainable.
