All Saint's Day in the Islands of Tahiti

November 1st is a public holiday called All Saint's Day in the Islands of Tahiti. It is the observance of the "Turamara'a". This tradition is faithfully repeated each year on the same day. On this day, everyone pays their respect to their dead relatives by cleaning up the graves of the departed. They give the graves a fresh coat of paint, add white sand and place flower arrangements on the graves. Although many families make their own flower arrangements, there are also people selling them in the market places and along the roadside.Thousands of candles are lit at dusk to highlight the freshly cleaned graves, beautifully decorated with flowers.
